Over five bi-weekly events this Summer, Play NC purchased 125 family-sized bags of fruits and veggies from Perkins Orchard and distributed them to LEAP- Latino Educational Achievement Partnership families and McDougall Terrace Residents on Saturday afternoons! The LEAP families included children who previously relied on our partner, PORCH-Durham, for meal support during the school year.
At each event, we were able to provide 25 families with enough fresh veggies to feed a family of 4 for the week. Our “special items” included varieties of pineapples, watermelons, some other type of melon that I don’t know the name, and peanuts. All of these items were graciously donated by Donovan and the amazing crew at Perkins in addition to the items we purchased. Once they found out we were donating the truckload of food we bought each week, they were more than happy to help with providing these extra items and we greatly appreciate their generosity.
Special thanks to Laura Meyers at PORCH Durham and Leigh Bordley with LEAP for their amazing contributions in organizing these events.
